Will You Work During Retirement? 10 Shocking Retirement Stats!

October 27, 2020 · Retirement Life

Who is retired and who is working?

A whopping 40% of people aged 55 and over were either working or actively looking for jobs, according to a 2014 study made by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Thanks to the survey, the department also predicted that by the end of 2014, 41 million people over the age of 55 would be engaged in the labor force. Of that group, 13 million were over the age of 65.

Furthermore, in 2015, the U.S. Census Bureau provided us with even more jaw-dropping facts. Apparently, in 2015 there were 4.6 million men and 3.7 million women that were still working were over the age of 65, with 5.3 million full-time workers over the age of 65.

In another 2018 study, this time conducted by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 11% of people aged 50 or older said they were semi-retired whereas 9% described themselves as working for pay. 5% were part-time and 2% were working full-time, with a final 2% describing themselves as self-employed. Of all the respondents, 2% even said they were actively looking for work.
