15 signs that your employer wants you to retire? If you’re thinking that it’s (mostly) illegal for anyone but yourself to decide when to take the big step. Thanks to the Age Discrimination in Employment Amendments of 1986, you’re absolutely right, with the exception of a few professions.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some employers out there who aren’t thinking about it. In fact, in 2018 alone, 16,911 age discrimination complaints were sent to the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission. Of course, these have been more ‘obvious’ cases. Other places of business chose a more subtle approach, slowly nudging their more seniors employees towards retirement.
