10 Best and Worst Things to Do When Looking for a Place to Retire

February 28, 2020 · Retirement Life

1. Do Look for a Lower Cost of Living

Let’s talk about money first, because that’s the first worry on seniors’ minds. It’s an understandable concern. Many of us will experience a cut in income once we reach retirement age, which is why it’s so important to really work on savings from an early age. But on top of putting money aside, it’s also important to make what you have go further.

One way to do that is to research places which have a lower cost of living. Plenty of seniors, for example, cross the border and settle down in Mexico. If you don’t want to travel that far, you might consider Colorado Springs, Colo., Bakersfield, Calif., Virginia Beach, Va., Arlington, Texas and many others. These cities, we’ve found, are most affordable.

The three biggest expenses seniors have to worry about are healthcare, energy and food. So, relocating to a city with a low cost of living will also help tackle those expenses without too much added stress.
