Getting Expert Help
Navigating an under-resourced healthcare landscape is exhausting. You do not have to do it completely alone. Consider reaching out to professionals in the following scenarios:
When navigating complex insurance networks: Consult an independent, licensed Medicare broker. They can pull data on specific provider networks in your zip code and ensure you do not enroll in a plan that lacks local specialists. Services from a broker are typically free to you, as they are compensated by the insurance companies.
When coordinating care across long distances: If you live far from your adult children or find it difficult to manage multiple chronic conditions, hire a Geriatric Care Manager (also known as an Aging Life Care Professional). These trained nurses or social workers can attend doctor appointments with you, coordinate prescriptions, and advocate for you when dealing with hospital bureaucracies.
When considering a medical relocation: If your health needs have surpassed what your local rural hospital can provide, consult a fee-only Certified Financial Planner. They can help you run the numbers on selling your current home and moving to a state or city with better senior healthcare rankings, ensuring you do not outlive your assets in the process.
Some of the measures offered here are inconsequential. How many people smoke is no measure of whether you will smoke. The same is true of drinking alcohol or over-eating. What is critical is the quality of nursing homes or assisted living homes, quality and availability of medical facilities, affordability of being able to live there, crime rates (which are not addressed), availability of public transportation, senior recreational opportunities, etc. Many of these are simply not in this article. If they were, I think the scoring by state would be vastly different.
Very well said….Thanks
