14 Smart Home Ideas for Independent Seniors

Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Homes for Seniors

Do I need high-speed internet to have a smart home?

Yes, a stable, broadband internet connection is required. Most smart home devices communicate via your home’s Wi-Fi network. While individual devices like smart plugs use very little data, items like video doorbells and security cameras require higher upload speeds to transmit video smoothly. If you only have a basic or rural internet connection, focus on devices that operate locally without heavy bandwidth, like programmable thermostats or offline motion sensors.

Is smart home safety equipment covered by Medicare?

Generally, no. Original Medicare does not cover the cost of standard smart home devices, video doorbells, or voice assistants because they are not classified as Durable Medical Equipment (DME). However, some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans offer allowances for over-the-counter health items and home safety modifications. Additionally, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) oversees state assistive technology programs that may provide guidance or funding for specialized adaptive equipment.

What happens to my smart home if the power goes out?

If your home loses power, any device plugged directly into the wall—such as smart speakers or smart lamps—will turn off. Furthermore, your Wi-Fi router will go down, meaning devices won’t be able to communicate. However, battery-operated devices like smart locks and smart smoke detectors will continue to function locally (e.g., the lock will still open with a code, and the alarm will still beep). To maintain connectivity during outages, consider putting your Wi-Fi router on an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) battery backup.

Are voice assistants always listening to my conversations?

Voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant are designed to listen only for their specific “wake word” (such as “Alexa” or “Hey Google”). While the microphone is technically on to hear that word, they do not actively record or transmit your private conversations until the wake word is detected. You can also turn off the microphone entirely by pressing a physical button on the device when you want guaranteed privacy.
