The West: Mountain Views and Desert Oasis Bargains

The Western United States features some of the most expensive real estate in the world, yet retirees can still find affordable enclaves. By looking inland or toward smaller towns, you can enjoy the region’s stunning geography on a fixed income.

Alaska: Wasilla
Alaska pays its residents an annual dividend, and it levies no state income or sales tax. While general living costs are high, Wasilla is more affordable than Anchorage while remaining close enough for major medical appointments.

Arizona: Tucson
Tucson offers the famous Arizona sunshine at a fraction of the cost of Scottsdale or Phoenix. Retirees flock here for the warm weather, stunning desert landscapes, and abundance of affordable 55+ communities.

California: Bakersfield
Retiring affordably in California is difficult, but Bakersfield makes it possible. Located in the Central Valley, it offers housing prices that are drastically lower than the coastal cities, allowing retirees to stay in-state without going broke.

Colorado: Pueblo
Pueblo is Southern Colorado’s best-kept retirement secret. It boasts a mild climate, beautiful mountain views, and real estate prices that remain incredibly accessible compared to Denver or Colorado Springs.

Hawaii: Hilo
Hawaii is the most expensive state in the union, but Hilo—located on the Big Island—is the most affordable way to live the island dream. It offers a slower pace of life, lush environments, and housing that is significantly cheaper than Honolulu.

Idaho: Twin Falls
Idaho has become a retirement hotspot due to its low crime rates and beautiful scenery. Twin Falls provides a highly affordable alternative to Boise, featuring stunning views of the Snake River Canyon and a peaceful community.

Montana: Great Falls
Great Falls gives retirees access to Montana’s rugged beauty without the inflated housing markets found in Bozeman or Missoula. The city serves as a regional medical hub, which is crucial in such a vast, rural state.

Nevada: Pahrump
Nevada charges no state income tax. Pahrump sits just an hour outside of Las Vegas, offering a quiet, rural lifestyle with extremely cheap housing, while still allowing retirees easy access to Vegas’s specialized healthcare and entertainment.

New Mexico: Las Cruces
Las Cruces provides warm weather, rich Southwestern culture, and a very low cost of living. The city is surrounded by mountains and features a relaxed pace of life that perfectly suits fixed-income retirees.

Oregon: Medford
Located in the Rogue Valley, Medford offers a warmer, drier climate than the rest of the Pacific Northwest. Oregon has no sales tax, and Medford’s housing market is much more forgiving than Portland or Bend.

Utah: Logan
Logan is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in America. It offers a low cost of living, gorgeous mountain access, and a strong sense of community, making it ideal for a quiet, affordable retirement.

Washington: Spokane
Washington levies no state income tax. Spokane, located in the eastern part of the state, provides four distinct seasons and housing that is drastically cheaper than the Seattle metropolitan area.

Wyoming: Cheyenne
Wyoming is incredibly tax-friendly for retirees, with no state income tax and low property taxes. Cheyenne provides a rugged, independent lifestyle with living costs that easily accommodate a strict fixed budget.
