Protecting Your Health in a Challenging Environment
Residing in a state with low healthcare rankings does not mean you are destined for poor health. It simply means the system will not carry you; you have to do the heavy lifting yourself. Taking charge of your aging process requires deliberate planning and a willingness to advocate for your needs.
- Audit Your Medical Team: Do you have a primary care physician who actively listens to you? If your doctor rushes through your appointments, find a new one. Your relationship with your primary provider is your first line of defense.
- Optimize Your Insurance: Review your coverage annually during the Open Enrollment period. If you live in a rural area, a Medicare Advantage plan with a narrow HMO network might trap you without access to local specialists. Consider whether Original Medicare with a Medigap policy offers the flexibility you need to travel out of county or state for superior care.
- Build a Health Savings Safety Net: Out-of-pocket medical costs can spiral quickly if you have to travel for care. Earmark a specific portion of your retirement savings strictly for medical travel, lodging, and unexpected co-pays.
- Focus on What You Can Control: You cannot fix your state’s hospital shortage, but you can control your daily habits. Walk regularly, prioritize sleep, maintain social connections, and eat a nutrient-dense diet.
“Retirement is not merely a financial event; it is a lifestyle transition. The quality of your longevity matters just as much as the funding of it. You have to actively plan for your physical vitality.” — Mitch Anthony, Retirement Expert
Some of the measures offered here are inconsequential. How many people smoke is no measure of whether you will smoke. The same is true of drinking alcohol or over-eating. What is critical is the quality of nursing homes or assisted living homes, quality and availability of medical facilities, affordability of being able to live there, crime rates (which are not addressed), availability of public transportation, senior recreational opportunities, etc. Many of these are simply not in this article. If they were, I think the scoring by state would be vastly different.
Very well said….Thanks
All 5 of those states are RED states. People who are easily influenced by lies and a party that is in a self-destruct mode!!
