West Virginia

In 2021, 65% of the Social Security benefits taxed by the feds were excluded from taxable income for those who are single taxpayers and have a federal adjusted gross income of $50,000 or less. But in 2022, all those qualifying taxpayers will be able to exclude all Social Security benefits.

When it comes to sales tax, there’s a 6% state levy. Municipalities here can add up 1% to that, with an average combined rate of 6.51%. While groceries and prescription drugs are exempt, clothing items and motor vehicles are taxable. Also, the property tax rate in West Virginia is $571 per $100,000 of assessed home value.
