7 Key Social Security Benefits You Might Be Unaware Of

February 8, 2021 · Retirement Life

Most people associate Social Security with retirement, but there are actually many other groups of people who can receive Social Security benefits without retiring. The Social Security Administration oversees and provides financial support to spouses, children and those with disabilities, among others, through various programs such as the Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs.

You may also be entitled to more than you think. That being said, let’s take a closer look at some Social Security benefits you may be unaware of.

Spousal benefits via a husband or wife

Social Security has various additional benefits but the most widely known are the spousal benefits. These stipulate that someone can qualify and get as much as 50 percent of their husband’s or wife’s monthly benefit. The spousal benefits can also be claimed by someone who hasn’t worked, on the record of their spouses.

Spousal benefits can be collected as early as age 62, but, just for maximum benefits, it’s better to wait until your full retirement age before claiming them. You can also receive spousal benefits, regardless of your age, if you are caring for a child who is younger than 16 or is disabled and receiving benefits from their parent’s earning record.

If you are eligible to claim your own Social Security benefits and also spousal benefits, your monthly payout will be equal to whichever amount is higher.
