Charming Havens in the East

For those who love deep historical roots, historic architecture, and proximity to major cultural centers, the eastern seaboard offers several quiet escapes that sit just outside the chaotic metropolitan corridors.

11. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania features one of the most generous tax environments for retirees in the United States; the state exempts all Social Security, eligible pension, and 401(k) or IRA distributions from state income tax. Bethlehem perfectly capitalizes on this benefit. Founded by the Moravians in the 1700s, the city features a gorgeously preserved historic district, cobblestone streets, and a vibrant arts scene fueled by Lehigh University. Best of all, Bethlehem places you within a 90-minute drive of both New York City and Philadelphia, allowing you to easily access world-class theater and international airports without paying big-city living costs.

12. Roanoke, Virginia

Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke is a paradise for active seniors. You can spend your mornings hiking the Appalachian Trail or driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, and your evenings enjoying a revitalized downtown square. Crucially, Roanoke serves as a massive regional healthcare hub, anchored by the Carilion Clinic system and a renowned medical research institute. Virginia offers favorable tax treatment for retirees, and housing in the Roanoke valley remains remarkably accessible compared to northern Virginia or the coastal regions.

13. Frederick, Maryland

If you wish to remain near the Washington D.C. or Baltimore areas to stay close to family, Frederick offers an ideal compromise. This historic city played a major role in the Civil War and boasts a pristine downtown filled with independent restaurants, antique shops, and local breweries. It provides a distinct small-town feel while sitting right on the edge of the major metropolitan sprawl. Excellent local hospitals are supplemented by the world-renowned medical facilities in nearby Baltimore, giving you absolute peace of mind regarding your long-term healthcare.
