10 Low-Cost Waterfront Places for a Perfect Retirement

4. New Bern, North Carolina

Not every cheap waterfront retirement requires crashing surf. New Bern is positioned at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers, just a short drive from the Atlantic Ocean. This placement protects residents from the brunt of coastal storms while still offering endless opportunities for boating and water views.

As the second-oldest town in North Carolina, New Bern exudes historic charm. The downtown district is highly walkable, filled with restored historic homes, local boutiques, and excellent seafood restaurants. The community is tight-knit and actively caters to the 55-plus demographic, with numerous clubs, volunteer organizations, and social events.

North Carolina features four distinct, yet mild, seasons. You will experience a brief winter without the harsh snows of the Northeast, followed by long, comfortable springs and autumns. State taxes are moderate, and Social Security benefits are fully exempt from state income tax, though other retirement income is taxed at a flat rate.

I JOINED USA NAVY IN 1964 TO AVOID THE ARMY DRAFT.
I ATTENDED ELECTRICIAN SCHOOL AND WENT TO AN
AIRCRAFT CARRIER IN SAN DIEGO. WE MADE 2 TRIPS TO
VIET NAM. OUR SHIP HAD 3,500 MEN ABORD; I WAS PROMOTED
TO E-4 ELECTRICIANS MATE. I DO NOT REGRET ANY DECIONS
THAT I MADE IN MY LIFE. MY WIFE AND I ARE MARRIED 50
YEARS NOW. PRAISE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. I AM SURE
    THAT EVERYONE AGREES…AMEN.
