What Can Go Wrong
Even when you plan perfectly, bureaucratic friction causes major headaches. The SSA manages benefits for millions of people, and systemic errors occur regularly. The most devastating issue retirees face is the dreaded “overpayment notice.” If the SSA miscalculates your benefit or fails to accurately track your earnings under the earnings test limit, they may pay you more than you deserve. Months or even years later, their audit systems catch the error, and they send a demand letter requiring immediate repayment of tens of thousands of dollars.
To protect yourself, keep meticulous records. If you continue working while claiming benefits before your full retirement age, proactively inform the SSA of your estimated income for the year. Do not wait for them to catch up via your tax return. If you receive a verbal instruction from an SSA representative over the phone that sounds contradictory to the rules, request documentation in writing. Phone representatives are well-meaning but occasionally provide flawed advice regarding complex strategies like dual entitlement or deemed filing.
