No matter where you chose to settle down, you’ll never run out of places to visit in Indonesia. You’ll have 17,000 islands to visit, stunning beaches, palaces, temples, and various safari trails to pick from. It’s up to you if you want to get in touch with nature while out on a hike or spend your days basking in the sun! No matter which option you go for, you should know they’re all more than affordable!

It might be a good idea to take a language course as not many residents speak English. However, doctors and many businesses do, so you don’t have to worry about a language barrier in emergency situations.

You could rent a large, furnished apartment on the beach for anywhere between $600 and $1000. Alternatively, renting a one-bedroom apartment in Jakarta, the capital city, will cost you $500. The same option in Bali goes for $315.

In terms of healthcare, if you know you might need extensive medical attention, it’s best to settle down in Jakarta. But watch out, you’ll need to pay for services out of pocket. Consultations typically cost $40 while inpatient care could cost $220 or more daily. That’s why a lot of people recommend private health insurance.

Retiring in Indonesia

Thankfully, retiring to Indonesia is not a truly complicated process. You’ll have to go through a local agency appointed by the Directorate General of Immigration, which will help with sponsorship and walk you through the process of getting a temporary retirement visa.

You may only apply for permanent residency after renewing the visa annually for up to five years.

The visa is available to those over the age of 55 who can show a proof of pension or income of $1,500 per month or $18,000 per year. Furthermore, your health insurance must provide coverage in Indonesia. You must also sign a lease agreement for one year, so be careful when you decide on where you want to settle down, at least at first.

Another requirement for retirees is having to hire local domestic help which costs as little as $2.50 an hour.
