Most Important Financial Benefits For Retirees Offered By Each State

California

– Social Security income is exempt from taxes

– Residents aged 60 and older benefit from tuition exemption for attending regular classes at California State University facilities

– Depending on age thresholds, seniors have discounts for almost all public transit systems

– Residents 62 and older get $1 discount on parking and $2 discount on camping at all 280 state parks; seniors with low income don’t have to pay any fee for vehicles with a $5 Golden Bear Pass at state parks which impose vehicle fees

– Discount for lifetime hunting and fishing license

Colorado

– Residents aged 55 to 64 are exempt from state taxes on pension and Social Security income up to $20,000 as well as residents aged 65 and older with an income up to $24,000

– Tax exemption for senior citizens -up to 50% of the first $200,000 of the property value

– Reduced or free classes for audit at Colorado State University, University of Colorado Denver, and University of Colorado Boulder

– $70 Aspen Leaf Pass for 1 year of unlimited access to state parks for residents 64 and older

– Free or low-cost transportation services in many cities

Connecticut

– Single filers with federal adjusted gross income under $50,000 and joint filers with income up to $60,000 are exempt from state taxes on Social Security income

– Property tax exemption of maximum $1,000 for single seniors with income under $35,300, and maximum $1,250 for joint filers with income under $43,000

– Tuition exemption for all classes at all state colleges and universities

– Low transportation costs for Medicare beneficiaries

– Free hunting and fishing licenses; access to special trails, lands, and waters for senior citizens 65 and older
