5 Compelling Reasons to Consider Retiring Later Than Planned

October 6, 2020 · Retirement Life

You will maintain stronger relationships

It might sound crazy …or not, but people who are very much in love don’t really like spending more than a few hours with their spouse. At least that’s what science says. For some people, having to be around their significant other 24/7 will prove to be quite challenging. Others will even end up divorcing after more than 30 years of marriage. “What’s pushing gray divorce is people are living longer and they feel more entitled to living fully. They’ve contributed to raising children, they want an emotional journey, it’s their time now,” says Lili Vasileff, a certified financial planner and president of Divorce and Money Matters, “They may have (decades) ahead and don’t want to be unhappy anymore.”

Putting an end to your career might also mean ending the close friendships that you have built over the years at work; not because you don’t care for one another anymore but because you will not be able to spend as much time together as before. Therefore, postponing your retirement might be the smartest thing you could do to maintain your strong relationships with your spouse and your friends.
