18 Surprisingly Affordable Retirement Destinations You’ve Never Considered Before

May 6, 2021 · Retirement Life

Bonita Springs, Florida

Named one of the most desired small town retirement destinations in the United States, Bonita Springs lies between Fort Myers and affluent Naples and is a real gem in terms of affordable living costs. If you’re a fan of warm weather (who isn’t) and beaches, you’re gonna have plenty of things to do in this seaside town.

From enjoying the local cuisine and seafood specialties to attending all sorts of programs and cultural events tailored for seniors.

The large selection of active adults and 55+ developments and prices not exceeding the national average, highly ranked medical centers and a warm climate all year young, Bonita Springs is a really smart choice when it comes to retirement gems.

But before that, make sure you also check out these 8 Things You Should Know Before Retiring to Florida.

Milwaukie, Oregon

Just 15 minutes south of Portland in northwestern Oregon, close to the airport and located on the banks of the Willamette River, Milwaukie ticks most of the boxes when it comes to affordable retirement spots. Its small-town feel, modern retail and amenities make it a good place for retirees who like city-like amenities and outdoor life as well.

You can walk along the numerous trails in the town’s parks and community gardens, go boating or attend art events. Oregon levies no sales tax and there’s also no state income tax on Social Security. The downside is that retirement accounts like a 401(k) or an IRA are fully taxed.

Not Kahului, Hawaii!! Average home prices over 1 million. Surely you guys are not serious. Cost more than 30% to live there than anywhere else in US. Infrastructure can not handle the locals and tourist at the same time. Most beaches are crowded and traffic is the pits. Do your homework and spend some time there before you send seniors there.
