Retirement planning isn’t just about the individual; it is about the household. Social Security offers incredibly robust protections for married couples, divorced spouses, and widows. Even if one spouse never worked outside the home, they can typically claim a benefit equal to up to 50% of the working spouse’s amount.
More importantly, when one spouse passes away, the surviving spouse inherits the larger of the two benefit checks. This survivor benefit is frequently the only thing standing between a newly widowed senior and total poverty. Because the sudden loss of a spouse often coincides with a drop in household income but a continuation of fixed household expenses, this structural safety net makes Social Security an irreplaceable lifeline.
