2. Kentucky
Sadly, Kentucky has really severe mental health issues. The Bluegrass State, along with Alabama, Oklahoma, and Louisiana ranked lowest in this department.
Here, adults suffer from frequent mental distress and are at high risk of isolation. Depression is always on the rise. Not surprising given the fact that in the past four years, excessive drinking has jumped by 38% in Kentucky. 6% of seniors over the age of 65 do engage in excessive drinking.
So if you’re looking for a community of healthy and supportive seniors to remain active with during retirement, perhaps Kentucky is not the best place to settle down.

Some of the measures offered here are inconsequential. How many people smoke is no measure of whether you will smoke. The same is true of drinking alcohol or over-eating. What is critical is the quality of nursing homes or assisted living homes, quality and availability of medical facilities, affordability of being able to live there, crime rates (which are not addressed), availability of public transportation, senior recreational opportunities, etc. Many of these are simply not in this article. If they were, I think the scoring by state would be vastly different.
