‘Getting a divorce will ruin your benefits.’

We don’t even know how this got so widespread considering the fact that the opposite is in fact, true. You’ll be entitled to half of your ex’s benefits if you’ve been married at least 10 years (consecutively) and if you’re not married to someone else. Of course, this all kicks in when you turn 62. 

So if you know they have a better work record you might as well try. As we mentioned before, there’s no way you’ll be draining their accounts either.
