Take Advantage of Your Employer Match

Get the full match by making sufficient contributions to your retirement plan, to match or at least come close to those of your employer. Otherwise, you will not benefit from the free money you could get.

The most popular type of match is 50 cents for every $1 contributed by an employee up to a percentage of pay. That percentage is generally 6%.
