Most Important Financial Benefits For Retirees Offered By Each State

Virginia

– Social Security is exempt from state tax; up $12,000 exemption on other retirement income (this varies by age and income)

– Tuition exemptions to audit classes for residents aged 60 and older, but this may vary by institution

– Lower fares on all public transit throughout Virginia for Medicare cardholders aged 65 and older

– $20 lifetime hunting and fishing license for residents aged 65 and over; also, they do not need saltwater fishing license

– Reduced prices on Naturally Yours Passports for access and parking at state parks, boat launches, and equestrian facilities

Washington

– There’s no state income tax

– Depending on income, residents aged 61 and older are exempt from property taxes

– Some tuition exemptions at colleges and universities in Washington for residents 60 and older

– Discounted goods and services throughout Seattle with Gold Card for Healthy Aging for residents aged 60 and over. Senior deals cover free dog and cat licenses, free or low-cost access to attractions, and 10% off auto repair and towing services.

– 50% discounts for ferry trips for residents 65 and older; discounts for buses rides throughout the state for Medicare cardholders

– Discounted fishing license fees for seniors aged 70 and older

– Residents aged 62 and older only pay $75 annual passes for off-season camping and moorage at state parks; no fee for those with income under $40,000

West Virginia

– $8,000 income tax exemptions for most seniors 65 and over

– Tuition discounts at West Virginia state colleges for residents 65 and over

– Free or discounted bus rides throughout the state, depending on age

– $25 lifetime hunting, fishing and trapping license for residents aged 65 and older

– 10% discount for all lodging at state parks for residents 60 and older
