New Mexico

New Mexico is the second-worst state in the country when it comes to seniors who live in poverty (12.2%) and it is the third-worst state when it comes to food insecurity. As many as 20.2% of boomers don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
17.3% of seniors are still working (62,000), 61.8% are able-bodied and only 37.3% are in high health, according to America’s Health Rankings Senior Report 2019.

New York

You will find 679,000 senior workers in New York (20.1%). It is also the fourth-worst state in the nation on the issue of poverty (11.4%).
A whopping 14% of seniors don’t know where their next meal is coming from, but at least 67.6% could still find work since they are able-bodied, and a further 42.3% are in high health.

North Carolina

The second-worst state in the nation for people who don’t know where their next meal is coming from (20.5%) is North Carolina. Also of note is the fact that 9.1% of seniors here live in poverty, though 32.7% of them engage in some sort of volunteering activity.
All in all, 17.9% of boomers are still working, bringing their numbers up to 309,000.

North Dakota

In North Dakota, 224,000 seniors are still working. Percentage-wise, that’s 21.9%. 9.9% of boomers live in poverty as well, which could explain why so many are still in the workforce.
69.6% are considered able-bodied, 41.5% are in good health, which might be why 38.7% are doing volunteering work.

Ohio

When you consider the fact that 13.1% of seniors are worried about their next meals, 7.7% are living in poverty, you’d be right to think that the percentage of them working is fairly low at only 17.7%. That means that 351,000 are still cashing in checks.
