25 US Cities With the Highest Percentages of Working Seniors

October 6, 2020 · Retirement Life

Scottsdale, Arizona

Seniors in the workforce: 20.6%

Senior population: 55,093

Scottsdale is the 85th-largest city in the nation in terms of population, expected to pass 300,000 by 2050. Job postings in what is considered to be one of the best cities to live in Arizona, include advertising manager, report writer, and business intelligence developer. Check out 9 Most In-Demand Jobs to Pursue in 2020.

Omaha, Nebraska

Seniors in the workforce: 20.6%

Senior population: 56,803

In the following ten years, Omaha’s senior population is forecasted to grow by about 28.9%, according to the Omaha World-Herald. Unfortunately, there is not much the city has to offer in terms of job openings. According to RetirementJobs, there are just under 500 positions, including server assistant, internet analyst, and insurance claims adjuster.

Charlotte, North Carolina

Seniors in the workforce: 20.5%

Senior population: 80,050

Charlotte might be the most populous city in North Carolina but job opportunities are quite scarce for the 50+ population. According to RetirementJobs, there are a little under 1,000 openings for job seekers aged 50 and older, despite the rapid growth of the city’s senior population. The southern city is expected to have more people 60 or older than under 18, a trend on the rise in about 90 percent the 100 counties, notes The Charlotte Observer.

Yonkers, New York

Seniors in the workforce: 20.4%

Senior population: 32,928

New York’s fourth-largest city has reported a 63 percent increase in senior workforce over the past decade, while the overall senior population has seen a minor 13 percent increase. The growing numbers of working seniors might be caused by the high cost of living in Yonkers, where the average home costs about $525,000. Not exactly peanuts money!

Job postings in Yonkers include registered nurse, automotive parts specialist, sales, and bus driver.

Santa Clarita, California

Seniors in the workforce: 20.2%

Senior population: 23,354

Santa Clarita has seen an astonishing 75 percent growth in the number of working seniors in the past ten years, while the overall senior population has increased by 65 percent over the same period of time. Some of the jobs available for 50-plus job seekers include project manager, payroll specialist, and software engineer.
