According to AARP’s Jeff Yeager, while rummaging through your kitchen cabinets, ask yourself this question: “When was the last time I plugged that in?”

Yeager suggests getting rid of items you haven’t used in the last six months since these are items that you usually use around the holidays or during large gatherings. In such situations, extend the period for appliances, mismatched utensils, and containers to a year.
