12 Best States to Retire in 2021

February 19, 2021 · Personal finance

West Virginia

About 18.3% of the population in West Virginia is over 65, which makes it a suitable destination for retirees. There may not be as many seniors as in Florida, but West Virginia offers plenty of great, affordable places for retirees. With affordable housing, low cost of living and property taxes, it’s no wonder ‘The Panhandle State’ is preferred by many people aged 65 and over.

Some claim the state has the friendliest folks in the United States. One thing is for sure, though, it does have outstanding outdoor recreation options in its mountains, lakes, and rivers, from white water rafting, to hiking, to ziplining or simply having a picnic.

Some of the biggest perks of retiring in West Virginia include:

  • Relatively mild weather
  • Quality healthcare options
  • You can visit tons of historical sites, including Harper’s Ferry
  • “America’s coolest small town” – Lewisburg, a city in southeast West Virginia
