Different ways to pay your taxes

If you have to pay taxes to the IRS, there are many ways to do it, from which most people would prefer these:

  •  Make a direct payment from your bank account, and you won’t have any fees imposed for the transaction;
  • Wire the money from a bank account (but you need to pay a fee);
  • Mail a check or money order directly to the IRS.

Plus, if you need some extra time to pay your taxes, you can file an extension with the IRS or discuss an installment agreement that includes a payment plan.

The cost of paying taxes with a credit card

By using a credit card to pay your taxes, the fee gets calculated as a percentage of the amount paid. Right now, these fees range from 1.87% to 1.98%. Let’s say you owed $10,000 and you planned to pay via credit card. In this situation, you’d be on the hook for an extra $187-$198 in fees, depending on the service you chose to use.
