Getting Expert Help

You do not have to interpret these complex regulatory shifts on your own. Given the financial stakes, seeking out qualified, unbiased guidance is often the smartest move you can make. Consider seeking expert help in these specific scenarios:

  1. When comparing localized Advantage networks: Medicare Advantage networks vary drastically by zip code. A licensed, independent insurance broker who represents multiple carriers can verify which specific plans include your primary care doctor and local hospital system. Ensure you ask the broker how they are compensated and require them to show you all available options, not just the ones that pay the highest commission.
  2. When hit with an unexpected IRMAA surcharge: If you receive an IRMAA notice from the SSA that threatens to drain your Social Security check, consult a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or a tax advisor. They can help you gather the necessary documentation to prove a life-changing event and properly submit your SSA-44 appeal form.
  3. When your medications are dropped: If the Annual Notice of Change indicates your essential medications are being dropped from your plan’s formulary, contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). SHIP counselors provide free, unbiased, government-funded Medicare counseling. You can find your local office through the National Council on Aging (NCOA).
  4. When transitioning from employer coverage: If you work past 65 and stay on an employer plan, the rules regarding when to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B are highly specific to the size of your employer. A mistake here can lead to coverage gaps and lifelong penalties. Coordinate with your human resources department and a Medicare advisor well before your retirement date.
