15. Slovenia
Situated in central Europe and sharing borders with Italy, Austria, Croatia, and Hungary, Slovenia is a perfect retirement destination for seniors who are worried about making ends meet. In terms of culture and sights, there’s no shortage of both in Slovenia, but you’ll also have an easy time visiting other European countries as well!
The country has a lot to offer, no matter what your tastes are. Want to spend time on the beach? Look no further than Koper and Izola on the coast of the Mediterranean sea. If you prefer hiking in the mountains you could spend your retirement doing just that in addition to skiing, visiting beautiful lakes, castles, and churches. In terms of climate, Slovenia experiences all four seasons.
It’s also an affordable destination. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in Ljubljana, the capital city, costs around $666. In terms of entertainment, restaurants, and groceries you’ll find that everything is reasonably priced.
Healthcare is another worrisome topic for most retirees but in Slovenia, everyone for compulsory state health insurance, and it is also common for residents to add on private health insurance for additional services. All in all, the two components will cost a lot less than in the U.S.
How to retire in Slovenia
You will need to live here for 5 years, using a temporary permit, before you can apply for permanent residency. That is because non-European Union citizens do not have an option for a retirement visa. As such you’re going to need a little bit of a workaround, but it’s not impossible to settle down there.
You will basically require two things. First, your income needs to be at least equal to the basic minimum income. Back in 2018, this was $450. Secondly, you’ll be required to provide a motive for your stay.
Again, since a retirement visa option is not available you will be required to apply for the purpose of becoming a self-employed worker or in order to study. Actually, that’s not a bad idea, since you could take language classes to help you navigate the country anyway!
